2018 Youth Olympic Games Qualification procedure released

The Youth Olympic Games will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2018.

The Youth Olympic Games were launched in 2010 in Singapore as a platform for young athletes to compete at the highest level in sport. A second edition was held in Nanjing, China and the third is scheduled for Buenos Aires in 2018.

The International Olympic Committee has released the qualification procedure for Buenos Aires 2018, which will include events for recurve cadet men, recurve cadet women and mixed nation mixed teams.

Athletes born on or after 1 January 2001 and on or before 31 December 2003 are permitted to compete, provided they fulfil the Olympic Charter and reach a minimum qualifying score.

Those scores are 610 for men and 600 for women, on the 72-arrow 60-metre recurve ranking round, and must be achieved between 1 October 2017 and 24 July 2018.

Fifty-four of the 64 places in the competition will be distributed via qualification tournaments, with each nation winning a maximum of one men’s and one women’s invitations.

At the World Archery Youth Championships in Rosario, Argentina, a secondary quota tournament will issue 16 men’s and 16 women’s places. A total of 11 spots in each gender will then be available for top-ranked athletes at designated continental qualification tournaments, distributed as follows: Europe – three, Asia – three, Americas – two, Africa – two, Oceania – one.

The host nation, Argentina, automatically qualifies one men’s and one women’s place. Eight universality spots – four men, four women – will be awarded to eligible National Olympic Committees by the IOC’s Tripartite Commission.
